Room with a View …. and what a View !!

6 Rooms overlook the Estense Castle, 3 Superior Castle View (20 square meters each) and 3 Castle View Suites (almost 28 square meters each). Our neighbor, called Castello di San Michele since the first stone was laid on 29 September 1385 (the day dedicated to the Archangel), was commissioned by the Marquis Niccolò II d’Este to the architect Bartolino da Novara. The Marquis obtained a loan of 25,000 ducats from the lord of Mantua Francesco I Gonzaga to begin the work that started from the Torre dei Leoni, the ancient watchtower that already existed in the thirteenth century. Bartolino da Novara created a fortified quadrilateral by building three more towers and then joining them with thick walls defended externally by a moat. The new structures were the Marchesana tower to the southeast, the tower of San Paolo to the southwest and the tower of Santa Caterina to the northwest. After the serious fire that broke out in 1554, several renovations were initiated and entrusted first to Girolamo da Carpi and then to Alberto Schiatti. The intervention of Carpi led to the replacement of the medieval dovetail battlements, typical of military architecture, with marble parapets and saw the addition of the roof terraces, which gave a greater vertical development to the building. From the 6 rooms mentioned above, our Guests can therefore admire VI centuries of history, perhaps tasting a delicious breakfast in the room in the morning, lovingly prepared by Biancamaria and Federica, starting in the best possible way a day dedicated to exploring the wonders of Ferrara. !
